What is Perthes Disease?

Perthes Disease, also known as Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease, is a rare condition that affects the hip joint in children, usually between the ages of 4 and 10 years. It occurs when the blood supply to the femoral head (the ball of the hip joint) is temporarily disrupted, causing the bone to become weak, collapse, and gradually regenerate over time.

Early diagnosis and proper treatment are essential to prevent long-term joint problems such as stiffness, deformity, or arthritis in adulthood.

Causes of Perthes Disease

The exact cause is unknown, but it is believed to be related to temporary loss of blood supply to the hip bone. Some possible contributing factors include:

Perthes is not caused by injury or infection, and it usually affects one hip, though both hips can be involved in rare cases.
